She has been a volunteer tutor trainer for Hawaii Literacy for eight years – an organization that focuses on teaching adult learners to read and write English. My passion for life coaching began while working as a Lead Crisis Counselor at our local community jail.

When I met with a client, each counseling session was ended with a coaching session to move my client forward in thinking and action. As I saw incredible transformations taking place time after time in each of these clients, I knew I had met my calling in life.

Even though I am currently very busy as a life coach with my own practice, I still continue to volunteer my time once a week coaching and following up with several inmates at our local jail. After all, it’s where the spark was ignited.

Over the last two years, I have learned many life lessons from the inmates – ones that could perhaps help each and every one of us.

I have found that most of the inmates share the same feelings, fears, and frustrations about their experiences. These patterns of beliefs are often the core reason they are repeat offenders and have difficulty changing their actions and moving forward in life.

Although I learned the following 5 lessons from working in jail, I believe that the wisdom is there for us all:

  1. Expectations

many of the inmates I coach are stuck in the past.

The majority of them have had a nightmarish upbringing with little support from family or friends; consequently, they often feel hurt and resentful towards family members.

The mother or father did not live up to their expectations of what a parent should be. Sometimes, the parents were the cause of their own decline because of poor parental example (father smokes ICE = daughter/son smokes ICE).

These feelings can be difficult to overcome, especially for someone doing time in jail.

How to overcome the mindset:

taking responsibility

for your own decisions and actions and

releasing your expectations

of others.

Acknowledging your past history

and

understanding the reasons

you became who you are but deciding to

take ownership

of your life and

be the person you want to be.

  1. Life Plan

One of the biggest issues for those incarcerated is a lack of a life plan.

When they are finally released, they commonly return to the same familiar life style and environment. Many of them have nowhere else to go.

The people and influences that propelled them into a certain behavior are all around them. Is it a wonder why they repeat offences?

How to overcome the mindset:

make a plan.

Decide what you want to accomplish in life and plan out a course of action.

  • How can you create a safe environment on the outside that is free from people and/or situations that will draw you away from your goal?

Surround yourself with positive support

that will help you along your journey.

  1. Alone Time

the inmates often say they feel disconnected from themselves.

They are afraid to look inside and examine the past. In essence, they are afraid to be alone with themselves for fear that unpleasant memories may arise that they don’t want to address.

So, they busy themselves with chatter or mindless activities to squelch the feelings . . . but, how is a person to heal without acknowledging that an emotional wound exists?

How to overcome the mindset:

Alone time builds self-understanding and self-esteem.

If you don’t know who you are, then you don’t know your own potential or what you want out of life. Alone time also enables emotional healing to take place.

Mindfulness techniques and meditation

are simple ways to connect with the real YOU inside.

  1. Forgiveness

One of the most common problems for inmates is to forgive themselves.

In jail, the inmates have a lot of time to self-reflect and examine their lives. They commonly feel regret and disappointment over what they did.

Without forgiveness for themselves however, there can be little self-trust which makes it hard for them to imagine and commit to a better life.

How to overcome the mindset:

The choices we make in life depend on

our perspective

at the time we make the decision.

Understand that we do the best we can do with the information we have at the time. Know this and

let the past go.

We can choose to use our

mistakes as a learning experience

and motivation to move in a different direction. That is how to turn a negative experience into a positive one.

  1. Self Label

many of the inmates I coach have had problems with drugs.

They are afraid to be released because they don’t know if they have the ability to stay clean and free from drugs. They doubt themselves.

When I ask if they think of themselves as a drug addict, they usually say “yes.” I ask them, “If you label yourself as an addict, how could you expect to be anything else?”

How to overcome the mindset:

your beliefs and thoughts have the power

to determine who you are at any given moment.

If you want to live a clean and sober life, then think of yourself as a clean and sober individual.

Label yourself internally and externally as healthy and self-controlled.

Believe that is who you are and act that way

– then you will be the person you want to be.

Most of the inmates I have coached in the jail have gone on to live useful and productive lives outside in the real world. I can only hope that the coaching played a useful part in their self recovery.

*** One of the reasons coaching is so valuable is that it allows the client to

look inward

to discover what is holding them back from living the kind of life they really want to live.

We can all learn from the life lessons above.

Remember – our beliefs and thoughts are who and what we are in this life.

Make them good ones. Pleasant journeys!

Dare to dress like your hero and change someone’s life forever!

The #Dare2Dress 2016 campaign is the ultimate fund-raiser to help unemployed women find confidence and work that will build a future for themselves and their families. Join in the challenge by dressing up as your hero/heroine at work, school, or play and ask your supporters to donate to our cause.

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, #Dare2Dress 2016 challenges you to step out of your comfort zone to demonstrate the courage that disadvantaged women need, to overcome barriers to economic independence. Your participation and donations will go to Image Mission Ltd to run the Dress for Success Singapore programme.

We want to demonstrate the courage that women in Singapore need to overcome their disadvantage when stepping out into the working world.  #Dare2Dress is a fun way to do this, so we can achieve the following objectives:

  • To recognize and instill the courage that disadvantaged women need to overcome barriers to achieve economic independence.

  • To engage all sectors in the community to support our cause – everyone can participate.

  • To promote the spirit of giving (in time, money or in-kind)

Be-bold

Take up the challenge to dress like your ‘hero’ and register online. Donors select who they support by donating to our charity.

Participate as an individual or team (more fun this way!) and dress in your hero’s outfit for a specified time, eg. at work, lunch time, or dining out.

Participants register their ‘dare’ on any day between 7 to 11 March 2016 to make their grand entrance. Your supporters (who dare not) will donate to see you take up the challenge on that day. Share your posts and photos on our Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #dare2dressSG.

#Dare2Dress is open to everyone and you may hold your private #Dare2Dress event to increase support and donations to our charity. We just ask that you observe the local laws on holding any public gathering (police permits may apply), and dressing decorum.*

How to participate

“I would like to dress up as my hero and help raise funds as part of #Dare2Dress!”

“I would like to show my support to an individual/team who dared to the #Dare2Dress challenge by sponsoring them!”

“I would like to donate directly to Image Mission and help disadvantaged women overcome their barriers to economic independence!”
