‘The author is very brave, disclosing her personal challenges and the solutions she created. I admire her unselfish sharing, and her courage in undertaking her personal quest.
She traveled a long distance to a special place, and even braved a fire walk–something difficult to imagine. She tells her story in an absorbing way. This book is charming.’

Authentic U 13 – Loving Our Children

I have a fund raising team, For Our Children (FOC) Singapore. We started in 2015 to raise funds to build schools in third world countries.

Ongkrong Primary School in Cambodia was our first project. We pledged to raise $12,000 to chip in to rebuild the school together with Tabitha Cambodia.

FOC 2015 Cert

Last week we went to visit the school. It was a beautiful encounter with the children. My dream came true. After a challenging 2015 trying to raise the funds, it was so gratifying to walk into the school.

2016-07-14 08.06.37

Frankly, I was a little nervous meeting the children. It was one thing to raise funds, it was another to see the children live. But when I saw the innocence in their eyes, I knew that it was all worth it. They had a safe place to come and enrich their minds.

Listen to what the sweet children have to say. 🙂

How wonderful it is in life that we can enjoy giving to one another. We are indeed one and the same, of one consciousness. It was sheer pleasure to be in the presence of our beloved children.

The pathway leading to the school was narrow, uneven and muddy. It was surrounded by murky water on either side.

The school was bare and dull. There was no sign of colours anywhere. It was bare grey floors everywhere. Brown wooden desks. And dirty white walls. I was not prepared for this sight. It caught me off-guard.

So you can imagine our delight that we came prepared with the right gfits. We gave each student a box of colour pencils. Everyone deserves that in life. 🙂

Seeing the children happily drawing away with their new toys, I felt a new life bubbling up in the otherwise spartan environment. Joy can be so simple.

The children were barefoot.

We saw a messy array of dirty small slippers lying carelessly outside the classrooms. That’s what walked them to school everyday. For some, it could be a daily 3km walk to school and another 3km back. But they came.

The children were clearly very bright and talented. From their drawings, we caught a glimpse of the children’s inner world. Their life, their living environments, their rich culture, their intimate connection with nature, their dreams and their hopes.

Listen to what an experienced Australian art teacher has to say about the students’ drawings.

I am so glad that they are not idling at home or peddling things to sell to put food on the table. This is exactly where they belong, in their school.

Life is made beautiful by our giving to ourselves and to one another. It is impossible for what you give out to the universe not to come back to you in multiple folds.

My heart has expanded as a result of this experience. I came back with my emotional bank account filled to the brim. It’s a most extraordinary sensation.

2016-07-15 00.13.00

We loved the children and gave them a school. When we went there, the love that came back moved me to tears. My heart glowed and expanded when I saw this message from the head teacher.

Ongkrong teacher

I am deeply grateful all who made the school possible by supporting FOC. Be it all the artistes, models, dancers, photographers, sponsors, FOC angels, FOC ambassadors and many others who used their talent and resources to make our fund raising activities a success.

Most of all, I want to show my absolute love and appreciation for FOC phoenixes, the ones who founded FOC together with me. Kate Lim, Iva Jo and Pang Siang, thank you. My eternal gratitude. Let’s march on. 🙂

As we continue on with our fund raising, we want to appeal for your continued support and love. Let’s end poverty by loving our children.

Let’s love our children by giving them their due education. Join us to take care of our next generation.

Support Dare2 Dress

Greetings from Joylight!

7 – 11 March 2016

Dare to dress like your hero and change someone’s life forever!

The #Dare2Dress 2016 campaign is the ultimate fund-raiser to help unemployed women find confidence and work that will build a future for themselves and their families. Join in the challenge by dressing up as your hero/heroine at work, school, or play and ask your supporters to donate to our cause.

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, #Dare2Dress 2016 challenges you to step out of your comfort zone to demonstrate the courage that disadvantaged women need, to overcome barriers to economic independence. Your participation and donations will go to Image Mission Ltd to run the Dress for Success Singapore programme.

We want to demonstrate the courage that women in Singapore need to overcome their disadvantage when stepping out into the working world.  #Dare2Dress is a fun way to do this, so we can achieve the following objectives:

  • To recognize and instill the courage that disadvantaged women need to overcome barriers to achieve economic independence.

  • To engage all sectors in the community to support our cause – everyone can participate.

  • To promote the spirit of giving (in time, money or in-kind)

Take up the challenge to dress like your ‘hero’ and register online. Donors select who they support by donating to our charity.

Participate as an individual or team (more fun this way!) and dress in your hero’s outfit for a specified time, eg. at work, lunch time, or dining out.

Participants register their ‘dare’ on any day between 7 to 11 March 2016 to make their grand entrance. Your supporters (who dare not) will donate to see you take up the challenge on that day. Share your posts and photos on our Facebook and Instagram with the hashtag #dare2dressSG.

#Dare2Dress is open to everyone and you may hold your private #Dare2Dress event to increase support and donations to our charity. We just ask that you observe the local laws on holding any public gathering (police permits may apply), and dressing decorum.*

How to participate

“I would like to dress up as my hero and help raise funds as part of #Dare2Dress!”

“I would like to show my support to an individual/team who dared to the #Dare2Dress challenge by sponsoring them!”

“I would like to donate directly to Image Mission and help disadvantaged women overcome their barriers to economic independence!”

For Our Children (FOC) Initiative Fact Sheet (excerpt)

Photog | EC

Who are we?

For Our Children (FOC) is an initiative started by Miss Joy Leng and a group of like-minded volunteers in 2015. She shared her plans and excitement about what she was doing for the children. It attracted the rest of the team leaders to join her in this endeavor.

FOC Phoenixes are the team leaders and FOC Angels are the wonderful people who helps with the fulfillment of FOC goals through the execution of activities and events.

NOTE: We are all volunteers and no one receives any salary or any form of remunerations for our contributions.

What do we do?

Photo Collage Maker_fCqhvY* Special thanks to Nan Hwa Chong Fishhead Steamboat for sponsorship for the printing of 2015 calendars.

For 2015, we have pledged to raise SGD $12,000. Together with funds from other donors, Tabitha Singapore/Cambodia will use this fund to rebuild Ongkrong Primary School in Kampong Trach District in Cambodia. It will include toilets and a well for the children to have access to drinking water. To date, Joy has already raised $6,000 selling her calendar. To raise the balance, we have an upcoming fund raising event.

Joy's Poster

For 2016, we have a bigger goal, to raise USD $25,000 (approx. SGD $35,000) to build a 3-classroom school. This school program relies on close cooperation between Tabitha Cambodia, the local communities, the provincial government and the national government (via the Ministry of Education). It is based on the fact that there is an acute shortage of schools, particularly in rural areas.

Understanding this situation, Tabitha Cambodia builds and equips schools, and then passes ownership and the responsibility for the running of these schools – including the supply of teachers – to the government through the Ministry of Education.

Fund raising from our part is through the sale of the 2016 calendars later this year as well as fund raising events.

Who is Tabitha Singapore/Cambodia?

Tabitha Cambodia (http://www.tabitha-cambodia.org/) has been around since 1994, reaching out to over half million people, working directly with over 30,000 families, through their high impact community development programs. It is a registered NGO in Cambodia – an MOU with the Royal Government is in effect through the offices of Ministry of Women’s Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is audited on an annual basis. They also prepare annual plans, budgets and annual reports.

FOC Hang Out

At times we like to hang out and hang loose with people who have helped us in our cause. It’s a great chance for us to get to know you and for us to share with you the intimate details of our adventures and escapades of FOC! Strictly for the fun at heart! 😉

What about YOU?

We are always on the constant lookout for volunteers with different skills and abilities. If your heart is willing and you feel you have something to offer, feel free to email us at joyleng@gmail.com with the subject line ‘Here with FOC’ and tell us how we can best utilize your gifts for the children. 🙂
